Whole-House Switches

Whole-house switches allow you to turn off all the designated electrical items in your home (and outbuildings up to 100 yards away) with the flip of a switch. Through wireless technology, the master switch sends signals to all the switches and devices you choose. The options are endless, with systems that can control almost anything, including designated lights, televisions, computers and accessories. The substantial savings realized from installing a whole-house switch will typically recover the purchase price of the switch in as little as one to two years.

Product Facts:

  • Whole-house switches can be installed in an existing or new home and typically takes an hour to install. If you have an understanding of electrical circuits (for example, if you feel comfortable changing a light switch or a wall plug), you can do the installation yourself. If you prefer, you can contact an electrician, who can install the switch.
  • There are two options for standard wall receptacles:
    • Both plugs on the system
    • Split receptacles where one outlet would be on the system and turn off when the switch is off while the other outlet always remains active.
  • Even when the switch is turned off, you can still manually turn lights on or off.

Tips:

  • Locate the master switch at a convenient location such as the front or back door.
  • For maximum savings, turn the switch off whenever you will be away from home for more than five hours.
  • The cost for such a system generally depends on the size of your home, the number and types of appliances you have, and how often you use the appliances.

Install rubber gaskets behind outlets and switch plates on exterior walls.
